Lower Calf Creek Falls is a 126-foot cascade in a desert canyon, reached by a 6-mile round-trip hike through the Calf Creek Recreation Area managed by the BLM as part of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The hike is moderately difficult due to sandy sections in the canyon bottom, but the perennial stream and towering canyon walls make it a classic Southern Utah experience.
The BLM has issued a specific rockfall hazard advisory at the falls themselves, so use caution when approaching and standing beneath the waterfall. Be aware of loose rocks on cliff faces and do not linger directly below the cascade. Day-use fee is $5 per vehicle.
Dogs are welcome on the trail and may hike off-leash in most areas, though they must be leashed in the recreation area’s campground if you plan to camp. The trail follows the creek for much of the distance, offering shade and water access. The BLM reopened this site in late September 2024 after prior maintenance closures, so current conditions should be reliable. Plan a full day to hike at a comfortable pace and enjoy the falls.
Spring through fall for comfortable hiking and reliable water flow; the Calf Creek Recreation Site was reopened in late September 2024 after prior improvements.
